Make a 6 x 8 Mini Album with me – Part 2. Did you join me last week when I showed you how to start making your own 6 x 6 Mini Album. This week we are going to look at adding the hinge and making the pages to go into your album.

I have received some questions about how I made the hinge and, specifically, why I included a 1/4″ gap between each hinge. I have found over the years that, if you want to add photos and memorabilia to your album, then the pages are going to start to get some bulk, especially the ones with tuck spots and hidden pockets. Adding the 1/4″ gap between the pages means that there is room in the album for you to add lots of bits and pieces.

As I mentioned, this week I will be finishing off the hinge and showing you how to make the 3 styles of page this album has. First let’s look at the hinge. Now we have the construction of the hinge finished, with the 10 slots for the pages, we need to work it so that it will sit nicely in the album and allow the pages to lie flat when the album is lying open. Time spent doing this is time well spent. Take a look at today’s video to see what I mean.

Once you have worked the hinge in both directions and made sure the back can lie flat, you can trim the corners of each hinge and add it to the inside spine of the album. For speed, I used Stampin’ Up! Tear and Tape, but if you have the time, and a heavy weight to keep the hinge flat, you can use a strong liquid adhesive. Now that the hinge is in place you can move to the construction of the pages.

For the standard double sided page, you need a piece of Basic White card 8-1/4 x 11-1/2″, scored on the long edge at 5-3/4″ and on both sides of the short edge at 1/4″. Trim the page as shown in the video and then add some adhesive to the seams before folding in half to make your page. I like to add some extra adhesive on the inside of the page so that it lies flat, just make sure not to add it too close to the open edge.

For the top opening pockets you need the same sized card as the full page, but this time you score just ONCE on the short edge at 1/2″ before trimming and adhering. For the side opening pocket you need one piece of card cut at 8-1/4 x 5-3/4″, scored on the short edge at 1/4″. The second piece of card needs to be cut at 7-3/4 x 5-3/4″ and has no scoring. Add adhesive to the seams and adhere to the second piece of card. I had 2 side pocket and 3 top pocket pages with 5 full pages.

To add the pages, simply add double sided tape to each side of the hinge and then slip the page over the hinge, making sure it is central to the book. Repeat this with all the pages.
