National Hug Day with Silhouette Scenes. Maybe this year it should be National Virtual Hug Day! With that in mind I am concentrating on cards with Hugs today, so both this and the cards I will be making on my YouTube Live at 3pm UK Time, will have hugs. This morning’s card uses Silhouette Scenes. This set has been in the catalogue for a while now, but it is one I come back to often. The simplicity of the images allows them to be used on ‘busy’ backgrounds.
I was keen to do a blended background for this romantic pair. To get some inspiration I searched Pinterest for sunsets and found one with a really mottled sky. I knew that this was the one I wanted to base my card on. But, you may be surprised to hear that the first thing I did was to stamp and emboss the silhouette. I used my Stamparatus to stamp in Early Espresso, repeating the stamping a few times to get a really dark result. Next I stamped in Versamark and then heat embossed with Clear Stampin’ Heat Emboss.
Back to the sunset and the mottled version I found had the most wonderful pale blue areas, as well as shades of pink and purple. It is this that I have tried to replicate using our new Blending Brushes. I started by masking my horizon with a Sticky Note to ensure that there was a clean line. Next I applied Seaside Spray in sweeps across the page, this has a slightly pink undertone, so worked well for this project. This was followed with Calypso Coral, Melon Mambo and a few areas of Blackberry Bliss.
I think you will just about see the mix of colours in the picture above. The key is to build up layers of colour slowly, you can always add more. Once I was happy with my sky I moved the Sticky Note so it masked the sky and started on the ground. I had no strong views about the ground, other than I wanted it to sit happily next to the sky, and not compete.
The first colour to be added was Melon Mambo, working from the horizon line down to the bottom of the card. Then I added Blackberry Bliss working from the bottom to the horizon line. I am really pleased with the final effect of both the sky and the foreground. Now, all this blending did mean that the heat embossing got a layer of ink on it. The easiest way to deal with that is to heat it again, gently, so it melts again. The ink disappears as if by magic. The card base is Seaside Spray, and the mat is Melon Mambo.
And as this was made for National ‘Virtual’ Hugs Day, I added a hug to the inside of the card using selective stamping of one of the sentiments in So Sentimental and the heart from A Good Man. These are stamped in Blackberry Bliss and Melon Mambo respectively. I will be using these 2 stamp sets during my YouTube live this afternoon.
