The Spot #134 Trimming the Town. Welcome back to my blog for another The Spot Challenge. This week we have a Sketch Challenge for you.
This was another of those challenges where I was a little unsure which way to go until the lightbulb suddenly went on. As soon as it did, however I looked at the sketch, all I could see was this first idea. So, rather than spend more time contemplating alternatives, I did a rough layout of my card to make sure that it would work. Decided that it did, and here it is.
Can you see the basic idea of the sketch in this card? For me, the sketch was calling for large blocks around a central point, so my buildings around the edge of the card front. Although there are dies that can cut out many of the buildings, they not cover all of them, so I fussy cut my images. These are some of the most straightforward shapes to fussy cut, so nothing too stressful. I decided they each needed something to help ‘ground’ them.
I decided that some snow might be the answer and tried this out on some scraps first, using Versamark and White Stampin’ Emboss Powder. This gave too hard a finish, so I started to experiment with different powders. I settled on a combination of White and Silver. Have you noticed that the White Stampin’ Emboss Powder is a larger grain of powder? Well, I used that quality to my advantage by adding White powder first and then the much finer Silver. The Silver filled in some of the gaps in the White, resulting in a wonderful ‘frostlike’ effect.
The background is the all over design of people having fun in the snow. The people are almost exactly the perfect scale for the buildings I selected. I had tried most of the ‘plain’ designs before I settled on this. The others were all, strangely, too busy and overpowering. The people standing on a white background is actually much more detailed than the other papers I tried, but the effect is so much better. Of course, the added bonus for today’s card is that the paper is one of the 15 pack with a 15% Discount until the end of the month.
So, what do you think? Did I fill the brief or not? If you would like to see what the other Design Team Members got up to, just hop over to The Spot Challenge Website by clicking HERE or on the image at the top of the page.
