Don’t Stop Believin’ Classic Santa. If you follow my Blog Posts regularly, you will probably remember that I have used this stamp set for a couple of my #SimpleStamping Saturday projects, but have yet to use the Santa. Today I am rectifying that with 2 versions of the same card, they use the same basic supplies, but have a slightly different feel, simply because of the colours I chose to use.
This first version uses the Tis’ the Season 6 x 6 Designer Series Paper pack, using Cherry Cobbler and Shaded Spruce as our Christmas Red and Green. The Santa image has been fussy cut and mounted on Dimensional, as has the sentiment, which is stamped in Cherry Cobbler ink. I see this as being a very traditional card, with a definite Retro feel, probably from the 30s and 40s. I have coloured both Santa’s beard and the white fur to look quite dark, but with lots of texture. The Colour Lifter is your friend for this as it allows the colour to be laid down, but with a softer finish.
As a finishing touch on this card, I added some Fine Tipped Glue to Santa’s glasses so they had a bit of sparkle to them. Did you notice that I have given Santa brown gloves? This was much more common in the 1950s than black gloves. I used a mix of Soft Suede and Bronze to get this shade.
My second version uses the same Tis’ the Season paper, but this time using the Real Red and Garden Green options. I added some of the Real Red ribbon from the Annual Catalogue and was less detailed with my fussy cutting of the sentiment. The colouring is more of a nod to Santa from the 50s and 60s with a brighter red and black gloves. At this stage the brighter colours and black seem to have become more popular, although examples of both versions can be seen in both periods.
Having looked at a lot of images from the 50s and 60s, there seem to be more whiter haired versions of Santa at this time, so I have used less Smokey Slate and more Colour Lifter. Again the finishing touch for this card was some Fine Tipped Glue.
I am really pleased with how these cards turned out. I am tempted to have a go at making one in the original green. Although there is actually some debate about whether he was originally in green. There is a suggestion that he has always been in red as the original Saint Nicholas, who was the Bishop of Myra in the 4th Century would probably have worn red and white. These were the hues of traditional bishop robes, although some historians argue that he the Bishop of Myra originally dressed in different colours. You see, you even get a bit of historic background on my website!!
