Halloween or Christmas? – You Choose – Day 6 for The Spot #129. Today is another The Spot Challenge Day, and we have a Theme of ‘Things with Wings’. I have seen only one of the other projects so far, and I can tell you that I was expecting lots of bats and angels, but neither have appeared so far. I have take a cute little image from Free as a Bird and made a Robin and a Crow! After all, it is Halloween or Christmas? You Choose still. Remember to see the other Design Team Projects, simply click on the image immediately below and you will hop over there.
These are the pair of projects I have made for you today. I had fun making both of them, even if it did seem a little strange to turn the cute little Robin into a Crow, but it works, so I may have to see what other birds I can make from this stamp. Technically the beak on the Robin is wrong, it should be slightly longer and thinner, but I am hoping you will for give me.
So my Halloween version is, as I have already mentioned, a Crow. We have mostly Rooks and Jackdaws round us, and to be honest, Rooks are a lot more scary to me than Crows. I think it is the paler beak. When I was still working in London, our offices were immediately next door to the Tower of London, which is famous for its Ravens. Now those are scary!
All I did to turn the bird image into a Crow was draw a longer beak on with my Black Stampin’ Write Marker. The beak that is already in the stamp will simply look like part of the face, but if you are worried by it, you could mask that area off and then just draw the whole beak in. Of course I have used the Magic of This Night Designer Series Paper, again, for this card, but I think it might be the first time I have used this particular one. The mix of Cajun Craze and Basic Black is perfect. I added a little Basic Grey around the end, just to make sure that the white core did not show through.
I have used the Free as a Bird Stamps for Robins before, but I never tire of colouring them. The red breast is actually more Pumpkin Pie than any of the reds. I do add a little bit of Poppy Parade so there is the just amount of red to break through the orange. Using Poppy Parade for the sentiment certainly helps to bring out the red breast.
I really wanted to use some of the Feels Like Frost Specialty Designer Series Paper for my Christmas project today, but when I went to choose the pattern I suddenly realised that I only had a couple of full sheets left! Happily one of them was perfect for my card. Although Gray Granite is not one of the listed colours, it is a pretty good match for the design I chose. I have coloured some of the Snowflake Splendour Ribbon with the Light Gray Granite Stampin’ Blend.
But this is the question. Which do you prefer? Are you leaning towards the Halloween Crow, of the Christmas Robin? I have to say that I am so pleased with how the crow turned out, I am leaning towards the Halloween project.
