The Spot Challenge 125 Sketch – Poinsettia Petals. I can’t believe how quickly the weeks fly past, but it is Tuesday at noon, so it is time for another The Spot Challenge. This week we have a Sketch Challenge for you, and what a great sketch it is. So simple, which means there are so many way to interpret it.
When I am working with a sketch, I try to take a few days letting the sketch sink in so I can then come to it without feeling I have to follow it rigidly. This means I just have it on my phone and look at it on and off for a couple of days, without coming up with any design. The key is NOT coming up with a design at the early stages, I just let the image get into my mind. Then I design. What I find is that, using the sketch this way, frees me from following it exactly. I think you can see that my design is definitely inspired by the sketch. I have a mat and a central element (actually I have 2), with a strip across the middle.
Both my projects use the Poinsettia Petals Bundle with heat embossed and die cut layers to make up the flower. They both have a nested stitched label to ground the Poinsettia and a length of ribbon sandwiched between these. Which is the circle from the sketch? I honestly don’t know, probably the flower, being more circular. But my point is that it doesn’t matter, the sketch is meant to be a launch pad for your creativity, not a strict prescription of how to put your project together.
The first project uses paper from the In Good Taste pack in the Annual Catalogue. It is actually both sides of the same piece of paper and brings a slightly more masculine look to the finished project. Using this paper also shows that you don’t need Christmas Paper in order to make a Christmas Project. I like that this has a slightly rustic and non-traditional feel to it.
Don’t you love those Beaded Pearls? They make perfect centres to the Poinsettia and are easy to apply with one of our Mini Glue Dots. The Gray Granite Shimmer Ribbon is the perfect addition to the project, especially as the paper has been matted on Gray Granite Card. Adding the ribbon in the centre of the project with the card on the edge of the project, helps to bring the whole together.
Changing the papers give the project a different feel. The Feels Like Frost Papers work so well for this design, especially if you are selective with your die-cutting. In the video you will see where I found the Seaside Spray patterned paper, and I think you will be surprised. The larger piece of patterned paper adds some background texture to the project without taking over the spot light, it also helps to give the spot light to the die cut element, which is where it should be.
I switched the Gray Granite Ribbon, which would have worked with this card, for the Metallic Seaside Spray Ribbon. These are both from the Annual Catalogue, so another reminder that there are products in the Annual Catalogue that work perfectly for Christmas and winter projects. I am definitely liking those Beaded Pearls, I can see using those a LOT in the coming weeks.
But enough of my Projects, we want to see yours. Above is another reminder of the Sketch we are working from this week. Simply click on the image here or at the top of the post and you will jump to the challenge page. Read the Guidelines and then submit your projects. You never know, you may win!!
