Top Tip Tuesday – Pigment Sprinkles meet Heat Embossing (with WATER!). Did you see the cards I made for the Stampers Showcase yesterday? I was very unkind and didn’t tell you how I made the main coloured piece because I was saving that for today. So here I am ready to share.
The colouring of the Shimmery White card is nothing new. All I did was add a VERY few Pigment Sprinkles in Melon Mambo and Gorgeous Grape and then sprayed them with water and watched them burst. I love using these and seeing all the individual colours that are used to make up the final colour. For me the trick is to not allow them to mix too much. I don’t want the ‘true’ colour, I want the individual elements. Melon Mambo has pink, red and orange, while Gorgeous Grape has purple and shades of blue/green. It is areas of the individual colours that I am looking for.
The key is to add enough water, but not too much. I use an old Stamp Cleaner Bottle filled with water to get the crystals moving and then just pick up the card and let the colours move around. To stop the colours mixing too much I use a piece of kitchen towel to absorb the excess water. You want the whole piece to be between wet and damp at this stage. Then we move over to the new technique (for me at least).
I first heard about this technique in a YouTube video over the weekend shared by Tim Holtz. He added embossing powder to card that was wet and then applied his heat gun. I expected a lot of the powder to fall off, or blow away, as the water evaporated. I was wrong, it stayed in place and melted. It does take a while and the finish is not a smooth as when you use Versamark, but it is a great way of embossing on top of heavily coloured card and not damaging or staining your Versamark pad. I love the final effect.
What I have found is that this does not work well on standard cardstock. You need something like Shimmery White, which reacts well to water. When I tried it on Real Red card the effect was interesting, but not what I was looking for.
