Christmas Table Cracker Alternatives. There is a great movement in the UK to move away from Christmas Crackers because of the impact they have on the environment, particularly the tissue paper (which most recycling centres can’t handle) and the plastic ‘prize’ that will go straight in the bin at the end of your Christmas meal. We need to look for some alternatives, and there are lots. Tomorrow I will be showing you some crackers that are recycle friendly, but today I have some little boxes that are great for a more adult table display.
I have used both Brightly Gleaming and Noble Peacock Specialty Designer Series Papers. They are both foiled, but the win with these is that you can fill them with a gift that your guest will like! This itself is going to have a major impact on the environment, particularly if you use gifts that are themselves eco-friendly.
The boxes are super easy to make, once you have the knack. I will show you step by step in today’s video. Even more of a bonus, if you are very careful you can get 3 boxes from just one sheet of Designer Series Paper. Cut your sheets in 3 at the 4″ mark and you should be able to get 2 pieces, which is what you need for the box, from this on strip.
To finish your parcel off, simple wrap a piece of ribbon around it. Many ribbons can be recycled as fabric, so it is worth checking with your local authority to make sure you choose one that they are happy to recycle.
If boxes are a step too far away from the traditional cracker, come back tomorrow to see something that might be easier for you to think about.
