Happy to be Home! No Crafting Here Today! Gosh it is wonderful to be home. The past couple of weeks have been a bit of a nightmare, but the memories are fading fast as we get back to normal.
If you follow me on Facebook, you will have spotted that I did get a couple of chances to have a wander around Bergen while I was there. It is a wonderful city and I would highly recommend a visit, although as it is known as the most rainy city in the world, you will want to choose your timing and your clothing carefully.
As you can probably imagine, I did take a camera with me, so there are a few pictures that I thought I would share with you, if for no other reason than I want to! I have many more photos, but I think there really is a limit to how many you want to see, and I may save a few for some Scrapbooking Projects in the weeks to come.
The local Tour Agent booked us into an amazing hotel, the Bergen Bors, which is in the converted Stock Exchange building. It is a beautiful hotel, right in the centre of the old city, well placed for the sights (assuming you have a chance to see them!). If you are going to Bergen I highly recommend this as a location. There is an amazing Restaurant on the 3rd floor, but it was way out of our price bracket, although we did get to use it for the enormous Breakfast Buffet. We used the restaurant on the ground floor, which is in the old trading room and still has many of the old architectural features.
A few minutes walk from the hotel is the entrance to the funicular, which I highly recommend. This will take you to the top of the mountain and, on a clear day, you will have the most amazing views. I was very lucky that the one day I had a couple of hours free was a bright sunny day. Just take a look at this spectacular view.
And a reminder that I was a long way from home.
The other pictures I have to share today include reminders that you can embrace global brands without embracing the associated architecture, as seen in the local Starbucks and McDonalds. These did not ‘jar’ against the local architecture at all. Big Brands, please take note!
Just across from the hotel was a shop that sold national costume, which was great to see. I am not sure if this was meant to be for the locals, or for the tourists, but I love that it is there to buy at all. What is the British national dress and when did you last see it? Morris Dancers?? I think not.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing a few of the photos I managed to grab in between going to the hospital. One day I may go back to Bergen to see if I can see it under better circumstances. Oh, and if you wondered, Bergen has an average of 240 days of rain a year, with an average of about 19 days of quality rain, sleet or snow each month. When I arrived there had not been a totally dry day for over 80 days.
