Top Tip Tuesday – How to Calculate Measurements for Boxes Part 2. Did you catch last week’s Top Tip Tuesday? If you didn’t, you may wish to take a look at it before looking at this one. Just click HERE to go to that post.
Today I am making another box for a Nails Inc Nail Varnish so you can see how to adjust the measurements for a different style of box. Today’s box has the nail varnish lying flat so the box is short and fat, with an opening lid. As last week, this box is 2-3/4 (height) x 1-1/2 (width) x 1″ (depth), but the dimensions needed to be labelled slightly differently. Last week the longest measurement was the height, today it is the width. Let’s compare the labels and measurements:
Last Week
2-3/4 (height) x 1-1/2 (width) x 1″ (depth)
This Week
2-3/4 (width) x 1-1/2 (depth) x 1″ (height)
If we start by looking at how we calculate measurements for the card needed to wrap around the pot and make an allowance for the flap, we will need 2 x depth, plus 2 x height, but we also need to add the flap (I use 1/2″). This will give us this mathematics:
1-1/2 + 1-1/2 + 1 + 1 + 1/2″ = 5-1/2″
Did you notice that this is EXACTLY the same as the measurements for last week. The only difference is that we are using the 1/2″ for the flap this week, but for the seam last week.
Next we look at how we calculate measurements for the card needed to go from side to side. For this we need 1 x width , plus 2 x height plus 2 flaps for either side of the flap (these help to keep the flap from falling into the box. Again I have used 1/2″ for the flaps. I find it is easier if you always use the same measurement for seams and flaps. The maths for this is:
2-3/4 + 1 + 1 +1/2 +1/2″ = 5-3/4″
We now have the measurements we need for the card to make the box. A piece of card measuring 5-1/2 x 5-3/4″, which is slightly larger than last week.
Next we need to look at the scoring. Let’s start with the 5-1/2″ edge. This will wrap around the pot and we already know the number of widths and depths, so let’s just follow those round. We start with a the flap, so score at 1/2″. Next we need to alternate depth and height, so starting with a depth, we need to move 1-1/2″ along and score at 2″, move a height of 1″ and score at 3″, a depth of 1-1/2″ and score at 4-1/2″. This will leave us with 1″, or a height. Magic, just what we need and EXACTLY the same as the 5-1/2″ edge last week!
Rotate your card by 90 degrees, it really is not vital which way. We then repeat the same process. Start with the flap and score at 1/2″. Next allow a height by moving 1″ and score at 1-1/2″, allow a width by moving 2-3/4″ and score at 4-1/4″. Now allow for another height by moving 1″ and score at 5-1/4″. This will leave you with 1/2″, or a flap. Again this is magic! Well actually it is all just maths.
You will see how I construct the box from here in the video above. Although I have not covered this box, if you left the base blank you would need 1 panel at 2-1/2 x 1-1/4″, 2 panels at 2-1/2 x 3/4″ and 2 at 1-1/2 x 3/4″.
Has that helped? I do hope so. I have one more video for you on this subject. Next week we will look at how to make a box for a circular pot. It is still fairly straightforward, but I do get a feeling that some people find irregular shapes more difficult to deal with.
