Monochrome Gift Box – Old Meets the New. When did I last make a box on video? I can’t remember, so it must be well past time for me to do so. Today I am mixing retiring, carried over and new (free) product to bring 2 monochrome versions of the same box. Am I the only person who loves that by just changing the paper and card you can end up with totally different looks. Even with both being monochrome, I think you will agree these boxes have very different feels to them.
I have a couple of tricks/tips to make sure that the reinforced lid to this box fits snugly over the base. The main tip is that you need the card for the base to be VERY slightly smaller than the lid. I generally cut them to be the same size, and then trim 1/16″ (+/- 2mm) from 2 adjacent sides, so the card is still square, but is a tiny bit smaller. The second tip, which is because of the first, is to make sure that when you score the base, you turn it by 90 degrees before each score. As the card is now smaller than 6 x 6, of you just score at 2 and 4″, you will find that the box sides are different heights.
Because the lid is made from paper, it is worth taking the extra step of reinforcing it. It is not that difficult, and if you follow the video you will see exactly how it is done, and that it is pretty straightforward. Adding the ribbon and a bit of punched embellishment really finishes the box off well. I think it takes a simple box to a designer level. Perfect for Christmas, or any really special occasion.
